排版一个空的平方根

有没有一种排版空的首选方法sqrt？我现在正在做的是\sqrt{\phantom{a}}，有没有其他/首选的方法，比如独立符号？或者我应该用幻影创建一个新的宏a？

该\surd命令只生成根号 √，而 则用 来\sqrt{stuff}排版 的平方根，stuff并在 上方加一条横线stuff。《芝加哥格式手册》在“根号 √ 用于表示平方根”一文中只使用了根号符号。
